Daily Overview for June 8, 2012 (Today)
Quickie
Make an effort to see things from a new point of view today, and you'll find peace.
It's disturbing how accurate my horoscope can be at times. Today is bittersweet. Not the first of those kinds of days, surely not to to be the last.
Peace, you have the permission to find me all day and all night.

back in the saddle
Hot Yoga ...it is my church these days.
Unlike church, spandex and piled high hair is the outfit and showing off your tattoos is the way to make friends with your neighbors, not turn them off. Body art is the norm, it is the expression of you. In this setting, it is a conversation piece and a nod of approval.
I go for my mind, for my body, and when I most expect it and when I least expect it, I end up being there because my heart needs it the most. It's hard these days to quiet your mind, to focus on anything. It's hard to be still and quiet enough to hear the sound of your own breathing, of the sound of your own life. I go for the quiet, for the dim light of the room, for the escape from the cell phone, for the heat, for the pressure, for the encouragement, for the practice of doing something simply for me.
In a slippy towel/downward dog "incident", I injured my shoulder in class about two months ago and hadn't been back until today. Interesting that my yoga, my practice, my church was missing from my life for the last two months, and oh so much has happened in that time frame. When I stepped into the candlelit room, I instantly knew that every little bit of the Scarlett O'Hara that told me to get up, get dressed, stop moping around, and get back in the yoga saddle, was right. My inner Scarlett O'Hara knows what's up and she doesn't mess around.
(My picture of the day: the yoga scene in the middle of the room, it brings a soft focus to my practice)
The teacher, Krista, when she turned around, smiled at me, walked right over, told me how good it was to see me, and then she gave me a hug - a real, genuine hug, a lingering "embrace" - dare I say she held me? Dare I say I haven't been given a hug like that in a long time? I remember a hug from last Summer in a humid driveway that lingered, I've replayed that one in my head many times over. I remember an embrace from last month in a church before the start of a memorial service by a man who I looked up to as a father figure who simply held me close and through choked up words thanked me for always holding his daughter near and speaking her name freely. I remember two years ago almost exactly, my father holding me tight in the living room of our shared house after I blew my lid for the umpteenth time and stood my ground about how our relationship was spiraling down and out of control and he promised me that he'd work on it. Hugs, embraces, being held, they don't come often or freely in my world. Sad? Maybe. At least I'm not clueless to it. Note to self: work on that.
It occurred to me after class, as I sat sweaty in my car how much we need human touch and that it's ok to need it. It's ok to be someone that needs, it's not a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength. Holding everyone at bay, the world at bay, an arm's length away, it not right, its not healthy, its not love, its not life. I had this exact conversation with a friend the other day about how it's ok to need someone else, their love, their strength, their touch. There is a difference between being needy and needing someone. The lines get blurry, but the need to be held should never be criticized.
There are always a series of mantras, reminders repeated throughout the class:
"Why are you here?"
"Remember your breath"
"Soften - listen to all those parts of your body of your mind that you need to soften and let them"
"Let go of that which does not serve you"
My mind wandered, and it came back, and it wandered, and it came back again...I was sweaty and hurting and not able to keep my balance, out of practice, and out of step, struggling to maintain my composure, forgetting to breathe. Not unlike how my life has waxed and waned over the last few years. But I kept on going, breaking when I needed to, catching my breath face down in the mat, coming up to laugh at myself when I looked back down again and my own Shroud of Turin was painted in sweat - the outline of my face soaked into my orange yoga towel - eyes, nostrils, big exhaling lips, and the outline of my heart shaped face, all in a sweaty shilouette. Even in struggle, sweat, and self-reflection, there is always humor. Always.
Finally towards the end of class, in pigeon pose, which I am paying for dearly, and with this hauntingly beautiful song reverberating off the walls, I let it go. I let it all out. This song was another "love at first sound" song - another piece of music that moved me instantly. Just a few notes in, I found myself not quite sobbing, but face down into my forearms, choking on my breath. I just cried. "Let go of all that does not serve you" echoing quietly in my mind. I knew what was not serving me, what was taking up my thoughts and my worries and my fears. I knew that I had to do something about it. I knew that it wouldn't be easy and that something had changed. Call it intuition, but I knew that I had to "let it go".
So, skipping the grocery store, and the to-do list for the night at home with a good friend, I ended up still sweaty in my yoga clothes, in front of my computer, unintentionally, but knowing that it would not be a short hello, and started the conversation of what I knew would end up being some kind of letting go. THE conversation as it's been so aptly named.
Had I have not gone to class, I might still be needing to have that conversation, but having gone to class, it was a reminder that I have to be in the practice of letting go that which does not serve me. Fear, anxiety, words unspoken, hate, loss, curiosity, unanswered questions, regrets, remorse, I have to let them out. I have to let them go if they're ever going to be replaced by things that are their opposite - bravery, calm, peace of mind, love, clarity, thankfulness, and forgiveness.
I don't think we are ever truly rid of the people that come into our lives. I don't think that I've seen the end of that conversation. I don't think that you can be impacted by someone and forget about them. Even if they leave this life - like my sweet Catie girl. I will always remember her for all the sweet, quiet, calm lessons she taught us all every single day. But in this moment, with the current circumstances, there are something that I have to let go. They do not serve me now. They may serve me down the road when there's more time, more clarity, more peace - when trust proves that I did the right thing by listening to my sweating, sobbing, distractedly clear heart.

fly.
this is on order
this has been read top to bottom
the thought of doing that as a living, and living here gives me butterflies like it's a new crush
something else gets my blood pumping too (public relations, writing, photos, telling stories that are unheard and need to be told) having one of these and one of these would definitely help
(epiphany!) even better...I'm already an enrolled, paying student and all I have to do is change my major
I've been a paying, enrolled Psychology student for 18 months and I haven't cracked the books or completed a course. Why? I'm just not damn interested in psychology anymore.
but marketing, PR, journalism...that would get me out of bed in the morning, and that hasn't happened in a long while now
a new career
a new challenge
a new set of wings
it's so clear now
over the course of the last two years, my unassuming Jiminy has said more than once "spread your wings and fly"
sometimes I take things literally
all of this reminds me of these birds and this walkway that I had the good fortune to encounter earlier this year

He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying. ~Friedrich Nietzsche
I've been standing and walking, have just taken up running and climbing, and there is always, always room to dance...flying is next, it's part of my "just around the corner"

message in a bottle
In the right context, the internet is a wonderful thing. Email is simply a rich history. I love finding old treasures. I found this draft email dated April 5, 2008. It's just a 1-liner, a little quote reminder from me to me:
I've heard this sentiment twice in the last couple of days...find the person who makes you want to be a better you and stick with them.
I've heard this sentiment twice in the last couple of days...find the person who makes you want to be a better you and stick with them.
I couldn't agree more, Lauren from 2008. I couldn't agree more. Lauren from April 23rd of this year especially agrees with you. It was a very early morning hour, but she was heard echoing that very same sentiment to her unassuming Jiminy - "I'm simply just me with you, no defenses, no disguises, I want to be a better version of me when I'm with you because I don't have to hide who I am. It's like diamonds, they don't become diamonds on their own, they take a certain amount of pressure and polish to shine. I think we could be that for each other."
I've been a writer since I was a kid, keeping a diary, a journal, an inbox full of forwards and long-winded stories between friends and old boyfriends, then came the blogging, and now still all of those things remain. There are journals, scratch pieces of paper, notepads, backs of envelopes, anything that I can scribble a thought on strewn about my house. When I come across them, sometimes I laugh, sometimes I scratch my head, occasionally I cry, but more often than not I am thankful that I have a gauge of how far I've come or how I am still pointed in the right direction.
Sometime in February this year, I had this time-travel moment, this back-in-time, back-to-the-future kind of moment. I opened a door that I thought I had long since closed and of course, my gut feeling from so many years ago proved to still be true. Despite the years of distance, he was not any different, he was not going to be any different, and of the two of us, I had matured and come to respect myself by leaps and bounds. The first time around with him, it took a heavy toll on me, took four years to finally say no, to recognize that I was just a yo-yo in his game, and to believe that I truly did deserve better.
This time around, it was a matter of weeks. Why'd I let him back? I knew it was a bad idea, but I really wanted to believe that he had changed. I believe in second chances. I knew I was fooling myself thinking it was just a "little fun" and I can't lie, it felt good to be "wanted' even if by ghosts from my past with shifty intentions. But...he was exactly the same, nothing had changed, not his pickup lines, his hot-and-cold fishing game, his bedroom tricks, nothing... I, on the other hand, was like a different person. Decided, full of self-worth, perceptive, and unafraid to speak my mind.
There I was though one night, thinking about the situation I found myself again all these years later, late night sitting in my bedroom, too distracted to put my mind to sleep, scratching my head, doubts and nagging feelings creeping into my heart and my head like weeds, I remembered that I used to write. I used to write about him. I saw the journal out of the corner of my eye, the light blue one with "hope" emblazoned across the front of it. It was on the nightstand in a basket of books where it had been for years. Interestingly enough, on the nightstand next to the bed he had just spent the night in with me a few nights before.
I could have clocked him with it. Tried to knock some sense into him. Laugh, it's funny. I would have never done that, but had this song have been playing, I might have been tempted.
Each entry logged with an exact date and time from 2007 and chock full of old memories and tear stained pages, flooded with thoughts and feelings of a love-sick girl who used to write to herself, who, despite her bad decisions, was her own best friend, who wrote what she couldn't believe but knew that she should:
it's not about you, it's about him
he's broken and it's not your job to fix him
you tried
you took a chance
you deserve better
let him go
live your life for you
find someone who will love you back
you can do it
I sat there, nearly five years later, skimming page after page, reminiscing, sometimes with a half-smile, sometimes with one eye closed cause it was too painful to remember what I allowed myself to be put through, but then ultimately finding the pages that I needed to see right then, five years later, in my bedroom, kicking myself for opening that door again. My blue hope journal, it was like a message in a bottle washed up on shore just when I needed it. It was like five years ago, my only reason for existing then to write those words was so that I could see them all these years later right, exactly when I needed them the most. I was talking to me, telling myself that I was still on the same track, that everything I was feeling was legitimate, and I still deserved every bit of better that he could never give me.
So then, with the words of a former me and the experience of a current me, I closed that journal and then I closed that door again. Never to be opened again.

cloudy with a chance of dawn
My first sight of the Dawn after a long, long night. If I painted a picture of my head & my heart right now, it would look like this horizon. Heavy & cloudy but not without a palette of beautiful light shining through. It's going to rain later this morning, feed the dry ground & wash away some of the dust that's been kicked around for these last few hot days. Rainstorms in June...reminds me of places further SouthEast of here. Those places have my heart, but this morning, I am grateful for these beautiful clouds that are my lullaby.

give thanks and good night
Right now at just after 5am, I am choosing to be thankful for:
*10 hours of overtime even though I had to give up part of my great weekend & had to stay up later than I planned to. *the realization that despite temporary heartache and an anxious anticipation of losing touch with my daily "someone", my fears turned out to actually be a nice reprieve from my daily "confusion"........ "I can see clearly now the rain is gone..."
I'm thankful for:
*good food
*good weather
*good friends
*good family
*a place to call home, just mine alone, where there is peace & quiet & a place to lay my head
*finally, I am glad that in this moment, I am going to sleep with a happy heart & a peaceful mind
Goodnight my friends
